Volksmoeders in verset: Afrikaner-vroueoptogte in Pretoria, 1915 en 1940

'‘Mothers of the people’ in protest: Afrikaner women march in Pretoria, 1915 and 1940'This article investigates the participation of Afrikaner women in resistance politics in the era before apartheid. The spotlight falls on two mass-marches which Afrikaner women organised in respectively 1915 and 1940 to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. In addition to the background to and causes of the marches, the events themselves and the results of the marches, an investigation is undertaken into cultural aspects of these demonstrations: the background of the organisers, the way in which they were in those days identifi ed in the press, the nature of the language used in their statementsand petitions, the religious milieu in which the marches were undertaken and the attire of the participants. Public and press reaction to the marches, including the writing of poems on them, are also focussed on. Finally attention is given to references to the participants as “mothers of the nation” and to the legacy of the marches.Hierdie artikel ondersoek die deelname van Afrikanervroue aan versetpolitiek in die era voor apartheid. Die soeklig val op twee massa-optogte wat deur Afrikanervroue georganiseer en in respektiewelik 1915 en 1940 na die Uniegebou in Pretoria onderneem is. Benewens die agtergrond tot en oorsake van die optogte, die gebeure daartydens en gevolge van die optogte, word ondersoek ook ingestel na kultureleaspekte van die optogte: die agtergrond van die organiseerders, die wyses waarop hulle destyds in die pers geïdentifi seer is, die taalgebruik in hulle verklarings en versoekskrifte, die godsdienstige milieu waarin die optogte aangepak is en die kleredrag van die deelnemers.
