The acculturation of the Khoikhoi and the slaves in the Cape Colony (1652-1910) – a historiographical inquiry: In 1652, when the Dutch settler colony in South Africa was founded, the western part of the territory that later became known as the Cape Colony was mainly inhabited by the Khoikhoi. Until the beginning of the nineteenth century thousands of slaves from other parts of Africa and from South-east Asia were brought to the Cape Colony. In the period before 1910 the Khoikhoi as well as the slaves and their descendants lost their original cultures almost completely and acquired a Western culture.
