Cultural resources management originated in the USA. The historical development thereof in this country is discussed. Attention is also given to other Western countries and the development of CRM in Africa and South Africa. As CRM has a definitive link with archaeology, this interaction also receives attention. A number of definitions for CRM and cultural resources are given. A synopsis from these are compiled in a final definition of these concepts. The aim of CRM is mentioned shortly to serve as a guideline to cultural historians and museologists.
