Muerte y derivados:: Industria funeraria en la ciudad de México

This article speaks about death and funerary practices, not only from its cultural dimension, but from the problematization of these concepts around new dimensions of analysis: the commercial, the political and the ethical; what makes up the funeral industry. The text presented below is also the result of field work carried out in Mexico City, in two of the largest and most influential funeral homes in the city: Gayosso and J. García López. The ethnographies carried out help to explain and describe the beginnings of this industry and the consolidation of a specialized and spatialized market in Mexico City that seeks to expand to the entire Mexican territory. The funeral industry is, in addition, part of a global trend in the way of understanding and facing death in contemporary times. In this way, the text seeks to define and understand how the funeral industry works and the mechanisms it uses to consolidate itself within a local and global market.Este artículo reflexiona sobre la muerte y lo funerario, no solamente desde su dimensión cultural, sino desde la problematización de estos conceptos alrededor de nuevas dimensiones de análisis: lo comercial, lo político y lo ético; lo que configura la industria funeraria. El texto que se presenta a continuación es también el resultado del trabajo de campo realizado en la Ciudad de México, en dos de las empresas funerarias más grandes e influyentes de la ciudad: Gayosso y J. García López. Las etnografías realizadas ayudan a explicar y a describir los ciernes de esta industria y la consolidación de un mercado espacializado y especializado en la Ciudad de México que busca expandirse a la totalidad del territorio mexicano; pero que, además, es parte de una tendencia global en la forma de comprender y enfrentar la muerte en la contemporaneidad. De esta forma, el texto busca definir y entender cómo funciona la industria funeraria y los mecanismos que emplea para consolidarse dentro de un mercado tanto local como uno global
