De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a painful overuse syndrome causing inflammation of the tendons in the wrist. Initial treatment of de Quervain’s include rest, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, wrist splints, and corticosteroid injections. These conservative treatments have been shown to be successful for many people; several found relief after only two corticosteroid injections. Newer treatments with holistic medical practices, such as acupuncture, are still being investigated. For patients with sub-compartments (a compartment in the wrist that can further divide the tendons which can cause pain), conservative treatments have been found to be futile.
