Behavior Modifications in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common mental health disorder diagnosed in children with prevalence ranging from 3-11%. The prevalence of ADHD is rising without an proportionate increase in mental health providers. Therefore, patient’s access to mental health is decreasing. As a result, many primary care providers are taking on the responsibility of prescribing medications for ADHD. Research has demonstrated that behavioral interventions in conjunction with stimulant medication is the most effective strategy in managing ADHD symptoms and other related difficulties for children with ADHD, including aggressiveness, a strained parent-child relationship, and poor social skills. This review focuses on behavioral modifications that parents can incorporate at home with, without, or in addition to pharmaceutical therapy. It is highly encouraged that primary care providers screen children for suboptimal home behaviors and educate parents regarding behavioral interventions, such as ensuring proper sleep hygiene and sufficient physical activity, starting a contingency management plan, and regulating screen time
