Strengthening civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems is a goal in its own right. This article details United Nations sustainable development goal (SDG) targets that are directly related to improved CRVS systems: SDG 16.9 to provide legal identity for all, including birth registration; SDG 17.18 to increase the availability of high-quality, timely, and reliable data disaggregated by income, gender, age, and other characteristics; SDG 17.19 to support statistical capacity building in countries
