E-learning – an education method and its benefits

Companies that invest in e-learning have different expectations regarding the outcome of the investment. According to literature and articles it is common that companies see reduction of costs as the primary benefit with e-learning. Therefore we ask ourselves the question if companies have attained the expected benefit of the investment in e-learning and to what extent cost reduction have been a determining factor in the investments? The purpose of the thesis is to examine if companies that invest in e-learning have attained the expected benefits. We also want to examine what the reason for investing in e-learning is and if cost reduction is the primary reason for investing. The study is founded on a qualitative method that is based on a case study in eight companies. The seven primary objects of study were interviewed during personal meetings while the interview with the secondary object of study was conducted over the telephone. The method for analysis is based on three different portions that are formed to give the reader a better overview of the chapter in a structured manner. “Blended learning” have proven to be the most used method of learning in the researched companies. The combination of e-learning and traditional learning contributes to increased efficiency and better accessibility at the same time as a physical interaction between teacher and student takes place. The companies did not have any expectations that e-learning would reduce costs, they wanted to achieve a higher level of efficiency and make education accessible for a broader audience. All the companies considered that their expectations on e-learning have been fulfilled and that the method of education is a well needed complement to traditional learning.Företag som investerar i e-learning har olika förväntningar på vad satsningen kommer att generera. Enligt litteratur och artiklar är det vanligt att företag ser kostnadsreduceringar som den främsta nyttan med e-learning. Vi ställer oss därför frågan om företagen fått ut den förväntade nyttan av investeringar i e-learning och i vilken mån kostnadsreduceringar har varit avgörande vid investeringarna? Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka om företag som investerat i e-learning fått ut deras förväntade nytta. Vi vill även undersöka vad anledningen är till att företagen investerar i e-learning samt om kostnadsreducering är det starkaste skälet till investeringen. Studien bygger på ett kvalitativt angreppssätt som grundar sig i en fallstudie av åtta företag. De sju primära undersökningsobjekten intervjuades vid personliga möten medan intervjun av det sekundära undersökningsobjektet genomfördes via telefon. Analysmetoden grundar sig i tre olika block som är uppbyggda för att ge läsaren en helhetsbild över kapitlet på ett strukturerat sätt. ”Blended learning” har visat sig vara den mest förekommande metoden för lärande i de undersökta företagen. Kombinationen av e-learning och traditionellt lärande bidrar till ökad effektivitet och bättre tillgänglighet samtidigt som det sker en fysisk interaktion mellan deltagare och lärare. Företagen hade inga förväntningar på att e-learning skulle reducera kostnader utan det handlade om att uppnå en högre grad av effektivitet och att tillgängliggöra utbildningen för en bredare målgrupp. Samtliga företag ansåg att deras förväntningar på e-learning har uppfyllts och att utbildningsmetoden är ett välbehövligt komplement till det traditionella lärandet
