The development of the railway network of the Carpathian Basin came to a halt after Trianon, the railway continued to operate separately in the detached parts of the nation. The important Hungarian-Hungarian connections were fragmented, and rail transport became difficult. The most spectacular railway lines from a landscape, environmental and technical point of view went beyond the state borders and the peripheries, respectively. The last decades have been characterized by the closure of railway sidings and the thinning of main line traffic, improvements have been made only in the European Union core network and in the agglomeration of capitals, and the minor lines with significant tourism potential have been maintained.
