The study of language, considered as a social and cultural behaviour, goes from “ethnography of speech” (centered on linguistic variation and pragmatics) to ethnography of communication. Theoretical and methodological approaches, based on field analysis, are therefore proposed, opening the way towards a pragmatics and a communicational anthropology.En envisageant la communication dans une perspective anthropologique, Dell Hathaway Hymes (1927) a introduit le langage en acte – verbal et non verbal – au coeur de l'analyse sociolinguistique. L'étude du langage, envisagé comme comportement social et culturel, évolue d'une « ethnographie de la parole » (centrée sur la variation linguistique et la dimension pragmatique) à une ethnographie de la communication. Des approches théoriques et méthodologiques, s'appuyant sur des analyses de terrain, sont proposées, qui ouvrent la voie à une pragmatique et une à anthropologie communicationnelle
