The study of long-term hypoxia in Black Sea golden mullet and scorpion fish showed that these species have compensatory mechanisms: system of oxygen transport to tissue and utilization of protein (nitrogen) substrates in energy metabolism. These mechanisms permit the fishes to exist for a long time in extremal conditions
