The potential of blockchain and smart contracts in insurance

Blockchain technology is gaining more attention in all sectors. Many consider this technology to be revolutionary with the potential to change the world as we know it. Because the insurance industry plays a key role in any modern economy, I found it appropriate to examine the impact of this new technology on this sector. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the potential of blockchain application in insurance industry. The evaluation was based on a SWOT analysis and trend analyses. As the result, it was found that blockchain technology can significantly reduce operational cost for insurance companies. Furthermore, blockchain has the potential to open up completely new insurance markets. Nevertheless, the investment trend in this technology is likely to slow down due to its immaturity and regulatory uncertainties.Technologie blockchainu získává větší pozornost ve všech sférách. Mnozí ji tuto technologii považují za revoluční a změní svět tak jak ho známe. Protože pojišťovnictví hraje klíčovou roli v každé moderní ekonomice, uznal jsem za vhodné prozkoumat dopad blockchainu v této sféře. Cílem této práce bylo zhodnotit potenciál aplikace blockchainu v pojišťovnictví. Vyhodnocení probíhalo na základě SWOT analýzy a trendové analýzy. Rámci práce bylo zjištěno, že blockchain technologie může pojišťovnám značně zredukovat náklady a potenciálně otevřít zcela nové pojistné trhy. Přesto trend růstu investování do této technologie zpomaluje kvůli nezralosti technologie samotné a nejasnostem v oblasti zákona
