Relative age effect on players of the Brazilian U17 Basketball Championship.

O objetivo do estudo foi verificar o efeito da idade relativa (EIR) nos jogadores do campeonato brasileiro de basquete sub-17, considerando o sexo e a classifica??o das equipes. Assim, foi identificado o trimestre de nascimento (quartis) de 540 basquetebolistas (270 de cada sexo). Para compara-los pela classifica??o obtida, os jogadores foram agrupados nas equipes: ?Medalhistas?, ?Intermedi?rias? e ??ltimas colocadas?. Todas as informa??es pertinentes ao estudo foram obtidas atrav?s do site da Confedera??o Brasileira de Basketball. Para an?lise dos dados foi utilizado o teste Qui-Quadrado (?2). Dos resultados obtidos verificou- -se uma predomin?ncia de atletas nascidos no 1? e 2? quartis (?2=23,78; p<0,001), com maior EIR no sexo masculino (?2=16,74; p<0,001) quando comparados ao feminino (?2=8,45; p=0,038). Em rela??o a classifica??o final do campeonato o efeito foi encontrado nos jogadores ?medalhistas? do sexo masculino (?2=8,28; p=0,041) e feminino (?2=9,43; p=0,024) e nos jogadores das equipes ?intermedi?rias? do sexo masculino (?2=13,08; p=0,004).The aim of the present study was to verify the relative age effect (EIR) in athletes of the Brazilian Basketball Championship Under-17, considering the gender and final classification of the team in the championship. Thus, 540 basketball players (270 of each sex) were grouped in quartiles, according to the month of birth. To compare them by the classification obtained, the players were grouped in: ?Medalists?, ?Intermediates? and ?Last placed?. All information pertinent to the study was obtained through the website of the Brazilian Basketball Confederation. The chisquare test (?2) was used to analyze the data. From the results obtained, there was a predominance of athletes born in the 1st and 2nd quartiles (?2 = 23.78; p <0.001), with the highest RIR in males (?2 = 16.74; p
