Detection of the openings in the Arctic sea ice pack, or leads, allow to sample instantaneous sea surface height (SSH) and this information is crucial for quantifying the impact of sea ice melting. It is therefore important to correctly detect as many leads as possible to obtain more SSH references. This paper studies 12 different classification methods including supervised-, unsupervised machine learning methods and thresholding method, being applied to the Sentinel-3 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) altimetry data collected in March/April of 2017-2020 and June/July of 2020 from areas all across the Arctic Ocean.
