De la rupture familiale et sociale à la reconstruction d'une appartenance religieuse : les Nouvelles Catholiques de Rouen, de 1685 à 1787

International audienceConsidering the phenomenon of conversion in the light of the social sciences allows a more precise understanding of the sociological factors that may been at the root of the conversions of the Protestants between 1685 and 1787. The archives of the community of the New Catholics of Rouen constitute a substantial corpus for such an analysis for Normandy as a whole. Marginalisation, both familial and social, arising from kidnapping or abandonment, as well as a strategy of isolation : these were factors in the conversion of those Protestants who were enclosed in the convent for a long time. The change in religious affiliation was accompanied by the necessity of social re-insertion or, failing that, of joining a community of regulars.Penser le phénomène de la conversion à la lumière des sciences sociales permet aux historiens de parvenir à une compréhension plus fine des facteurs sociologiques qui ont pu être à l’origine des conversions des protestantes entre 1685 et 1787. Les archives de la communauté des Nouvelles Catholiques de Rouen constituent un corpus significatif pour mener une telle analyse à l’échelle de la Normandie. La marginalisation familiale et sociale, résultant d’un enlèvement ou d’un abandon, ainsi qu’une stratégie d’isolement ont été des facteurs de la conversion des protestantes longtemps enfermées dans ce couvent.
