In this chapter, a mother, Lena, describes her experiences of child psychotherapy support in a pupil referral unit for her son, Alek, who was 7 years old when he moved there, having reached crisis point at his primary school. She describes her “morale and confidence being at zero” when they arrived, but how, gradually, they began to understand more about the nature of his problems by getting a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder and through Alek’s long-term individual and group therapy. In conversation with Alek’s therapist, Fiona Henderson, they together remember years of “two steps forward, one step back” during his time at the unit and how, against the odds, he made it back into mainstream school for his secondary education
