March 24, 2009Ilse Ruth Ober was born on Nov. 15, 1927 in Vienna, Austria, where she lived with her parents in the 20th District (Brigittenau). Her father owned a small stamp shop. She experienced the Anschluss and the Reichskristallnacht in Vienna before she left for England with the help of a Kindertransport and spent a year and a half at a boarding school. When her parents were able to leave Vienna, they came to pick her up and they immigrated to New York. Her father started a stamp business again and Ilse Ober went to college in evenings, eventually becoming a civil service for the State of New York, taking care of workers’ compensation.Austrian Heritage Collectio
