Self-Regenerating Crime: The Resilient Network of a Sector of Rio de Janeiro’s Drug Trafficking in the 1970s

O crime que se regenera: A resiliente rede de um segmento do narcotráfico fluminense em 1970 traça uma análise de rede social (ARS) do narcotráfico fluminense no início dos anos 1970. Depois de revisar a teoria do crime organizado e onde a ARS se posiciona, mostramos como a rede foi construída. As partes restantes exploram o social embeddedness da rede, sua topologia e como ela se comporta diante de estratégias de ataque. Os resultados mostram que a rede se organizava em uma topologia comunitária de alta modularidade com efeito de pequeno-mundo e pequena a moderada acoplagem social, potencialmente resiliente contra estratégias de ataque. Na conclusão, traçamos algumas implicações para a teoria sociológica mais geral.This paper provides a social network analysis (SNA) of Rio de Janeiro’s drug trafficking in the early 1970s. After presenting an overview of organized crime theory and the place of SNA in it, I show how the network was constructed. The remaining parts explores the social embeddedness of the network, its topology, and how it behaves in response to attack strategies. The findings show that the network organized itself through a modular topology with small-world effects and a small to moderate social embeddedness, which is potentially resilient to attack strategies. In conclusion, I outline some of the implications for sociological theory
