The memoir is dedicated to Hans Hamburger's life, Charlotte Hamburger's husband. She discusses her husband's father's and his sister's life, and at the same time provides a brief insight into Imperial Germany. She hardly talks about her own life and family. The memoir follows a chronological order. His childhood, mainly affected by his mentally ill mother Ida, his friend Ernst Asch, his law studies in Munich, World War I, during which he was severly injured. The time after the war was spent with a lot of traveling; they had 4 children.
