The memoir is dedicated to Hans Hamburger's life, Charlotte Hamburger's husband. She discusses her husband's father's and his sister's life, and at the same time provides a brief insight into Imperial Germany. She hardly talks about her own life and family. The memoir follows a chronological order. His childhood, mainly affected by his mentally ill mother Ida, his friend Ernst Asch, his law studies in Munich, World War I, during which he was severly injured. The time after the war was spent with a lot of traveling; they had 4 children. Hitler's rise and its consequences for Jews are described in detail; their emigration to Brazil, their life after arrival, and building up a Jewish community.Hans Hamburger was born in 1891 in Posen (Poznan), Prussia, the son of Naphtali and Ida Hamburger (née Lichtenstein). Naphtali (short: Nepp) went to high school at Realgymnasium in Posen. He was a very good student but his parents could not afford the expenses of a university education. So he started working in a bank and became the director of "Ostbank fuer Handel und Gewerbe". When Hans was 12 years old his mother Ida was put in a mental asylum for 30 years. His sister Hede, four years older than Hans, moved to Berlin to attend a Gymnasium to get prepared for studies at the university. She became a physician. Hans was a good pupil. He attended the "Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium". Later, he studied law in Munich, Germany, where he became a member of the fraternity "Thuringia". Hans entered the army during World War I, and received the Iron Cross, a military decoration. In January 1918, Hans was severely injured. His left arm had to be amputated. After the war, Hans lived with his father who had moved to Berlin, because Posen became part of Poland. Hans became a judge. He married Charlotte who was several years younger than him. They had four children, Hufo, Stefan, Wolfgang, and Adelheid. In September 1936, the family left Germany for Sao Paulo, Brazil. They first boarded a ship to London and six weeks later to Santos, Brazil. Hans worked as an administrator for funds distributed by the Joints Committee and later became the head of the Jewish community in Sao Paulo. He died in 1953 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.Charlotte Hamburger was born around 1900 in Germany.
