According to the traditional interpretation, expressed in the literature either overtly or implicitly, Proto‑Slavic inherited i‑stem adjectives from Proto‑Indo‑European (or from a post‑PIE dialect that innovated simplex i‑stem adjectives like most other branches; cf. Hitt. palḫ‑i‑ ‘broad’, Ved. śúc‑i‑ ‘bright’ etc.); however, due to their anomalous structure and to Slavic‑internal phonological developments in final syllables, they stopped displaying overt inflectional markers.
