The formalisation of evolutionary theory : a historical and philosophical approach

Le but de cette thèse est d’explorer l’hypothèse que l’histoire de la biologie évolutive de l’après-Darwin pourrait être interprétée comme le résultat d’un double processus, quoique toujours inachevé, de généralisation et de formalisation de la théorie de l’évolution dans le but d’unifier les sciences de la vie sous l’égide du principe de sélection naturelle. Plus précisément, un tel processus se serait concrétisé par l’émergence de la théorie synthétique de l’évolution en tant que cadre conceptuel qui définit les principes de base qu’orientent la biologie évolutive contemporaine. Néanmoins, en quoi les présupposés sur lesquels repose ce cadre offriraient-ils une vision unifiée et généralisée du vivant ? Dans un premier temps (partie I), nous montrerons en quoi la théorie synthétique de l’évolution peut être considérée comme un cadre conceptuel (chapitre 1). Cela nous amènera à analyser la manière dont les fondements de cette dernière sont présentés dans un certain nombre de manuels scientifiques, afin de comparer une telle présentation avec les différentes tentatives qui ont été menée jusqu’ici dans le but de mieux définir l’architecture conceptuelle de la théorie synthétique dans une approche formelle (chapitre 2). Dans un second temps (partie II), nous verrons en quoi les débats récents autour de l’extension de la synthème moderne remettent en cause les représentations de cette dernière que nous avons analysées dans la partie précédente (chapitre 3) et nous tournerons vers l’œuvre de R. A. Fisher pour chercher une alternative (chapitre 4).The aim of this thesis is to explore the hypothesis that the history of evolutionary biology in the post-Darwin era could be interpreted as the result of a twofold, though still unfinished, process of generalizing and formalizing the theory of evolution in order to unify the life sciences under the aegis of the principle of natural selection. More specifically, such a process would have resulted in the emergence of the synthetic theory of evolution as a conceptual framework that defines the basic principles guiding contemporary evolutionary biology. Nevertheless, how would the assumptions on which this framework is based provide a unified and generalized view of living things? First (Part I), we will show how the synthetic theory of evolution can be considered as a conceptual framework (Chapter 1). This will lead us to analyse the way in which the foundations of the latter are presented in a number of scientific textbooks, in order to compare such a presentation with the various attempts that have been made so far to better define the conceptual architecture of the synthetic theory in a formal approach (chapter 2). In a second step (part II), we will see how the recent debates around the extension of the modern synthesizer call into question the representations of the latter that we analysed in the previous part (chapter 3) and we will turn to the work of R. A. Fisher to look for an alternative (chapter 4)
