Les États-Unis en Noirs et Blancs. Le cinéma, reflet et/ou moteur des fractures sociales ?

This paper’s aim is to understand to what extent the social evolution of Black people in the US has been mirrored on their representation in motion pictures. From slavery to the Black Power movement of the 1970s, African Americans became citizens and activists. From 1915 to 2019, mainstream films caricatured them in choosing White people to play their roles. Then, Blacks were denied or underestimated. All of that until a decade ago, a time from whence Hollywood has seemed to be ready to honor Black people and integrate them in the frame of its national mythology. In a nutshell, the present paper consists of an equating between cinema and historiography, in order to understand how African Americans’ representation is influenced by and provide input for social evolutions to build a collective memory.Ce travail cherche à comprendre comment l’évolution de la place des Noirs dans la société étatsunienne s’est répercutée sur leur représentation dans le cinéma. Du temps de l’esclavage au Black Power des années 1970, les Africains-Américains sont devenus citoyens et militants. De 1915 à 2019, les films grand public les ont caricaturés, joués par des Blancs grimés, niés ou minimisés. Jusqu’aux dix dernières années, un temps où Hollywood semble enfin prêt à glorifier les Noirs et à les intégrer à une mythologie nationale. En somme, cette étude consiste à assimiler le cinéma à une historiographie, afin de comprendre comment la représentation des Africains-Américains nourrit et se nourrit des évolutions sociales pour fonder une mémoire collective
