International audienceThe Mississippi delta is regularly the scene of ecological and climatic cataclysms (Colten 2014). For more than a century, an engineering hubris has claimed to regulate the capricious watershed and to prevent flooding. But the cost has been, among other things, a sediment deficit and the downgrading of the delta. The soil is slipping away, sinking little by little into the sea. Between 1930 and 2010, the Mississippi delta lost about a quarter of its land mass (Hemmerling 2017). The Gulf of Mexico continental shelf is subject to tecto-subsidence (Fort et al. 2015): compaction of readily compressible alluvial material causes topographic lowering.
