Cellular receptors are normally divided into two large families according to their ability to induce signaling pathways. The first family includes the classic receptors which work as an on/off switch that induces a positive signaling pathway in the presence of their ligand and which are deactivated in the absence of the ligand. The second family, in which we are interested in this thesis, is a recently described cell membrane receptors called dependence receptors which are always active; in the presence of their ligand, these receptors induce a “positive” signaling pathway often leading to cell survival and in the absence of their ligand, they induce a “negative” signaling pathway often leading to apoptosis by extrinsic activation of caspas...
