The purpose of this research was to understand the links that could be established between the learning of French as a second language by newly arrived allophone pupils and their learning of reading from the first days of school. The aim was to observe the tipping point between the vision of a language barrier as an obstacle to learning and the consideration of an emerging bilingualism as a springboard for the development of new skills. In the context of this dissertation, comprehensive interviews made it possible to collect qualitative data directly from children in schools; these data were supplemented by classroom observation sessions and a documentary collection from teachers.
