Les nasales /ɛ̃/ et /ɑ̃/ chez les apprenants hellénophones

International audienceThe aim of this article is to present the results of a study on the acquisition of the French nasal vowel /ɛ̃/ (compared to the nasal vowel /ɑ̃/) by Greek Cypriot learners. In order to evaluate the competence of the participants in the study with respect to the perception and production of these two vowels, we used 1) two phonetic discrimination tests, 2) a reading aloud test, and 3) the acoustic analysis of a small number of words produced by the participants and containing the two vowels. The study has highlighted on the one hand that, in perception, learners distinguish relatively accurately the nasality feature from the orality feature, but often confuse the quality of the two vowels; on the other hand, in production, the phoneme /ɛ̃/ is either realized as /ɑ̃/ (or as phonetically close sounds), or denasalized with or without unpacking, or accompanied by an epenthetic nasal consonant. Finally, we show the benefits of our study for the learning of pronunciation and we make some recommendations concerning pronunciation instruction.L’objectif de cet article est de présenter une étude portant sur l’acquisition de la voyelle nasale /ɛ̃/ du français (en comparaison avec la voyelle nasale /ɑ̃/) par des apprenants chypriotes grecs. Pour évaluer la compétence de perception et de production de ces voyelles chez les participants à l’étude, nous avons utilisé 1) des tests de discrimination phonétique, 2) un test de lecture à voix haute, et 3) une analyse acoustique d’un petit nombre de mots produits par les participants et contenant les deux voyelles. L’étude a mis en lumière d’une part, qu’en perception, l’apprenant distingue relativement bien le trait de nasalité du trait d’oralité, mais confond souvent le timbre des deux voyelles, et d’autre part, qu’en production, le phonème /ɛ̃/ est soit confondu avec /ɑ̃/ (ou des sons approchants), soit dénasalisé avec ou sans décompactage, soit accompagné d’une consonne nasale épenthétique. Enfin, nous montrons l’intérêt de notre étude pour l’apprentissage de la prononciation et nous faisons des recommandations didactiques
