Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is widespread among pre-school children (0-3 years). It is a real global public health problem, and leads to medical, social, aesthetic and financial complications for the child, his/her entourage and the State. However, it is preventable, through rigorous primary prevention, thanks to the implementation of simple oral hygiene practices, combined with a balanced diet, a reasoned use of fluoride, and frequent visits to the dental surgeon. The aim of this thesis is to understand why this primary prevention, although fairly simple to set up, does not really have any observable effectiveness in pre-school children.
