Toczek Family Collection 1864-1979 Bulk dates: 1910-1938

This collection contains the personal papers of physician Heinrich Toczek (1898-1978), the social worker Hanna-Herta Toczek née Lewin (1900-1977), and their son Peter, reflecting their life in Berlin, Germany and their immigration to the U.S. in 1938. Materials include vital records, military records from World War I, education records, official correspondence, emigration papers, and personal correspondence with relatives who stayed behind in Germany and others who fled to Shanghai.Born in Frankfurt an der Oder, Germany on March 9, 1898, Heinrich Toczek was the son of the merchant Max Toczek and his wife Rosa née Henschel. He served in the German army during World War I and then studied medicine at the University of Berlin. He completed his doctorate in 1923 and practiced as a physician in Berlin until his dismissal from the profession in 1933 on “racial” grounds. He immigrated to the United States in 1938 with his wife, Hanna-Herta née Lewin (1900-1977) and their son Peter (born 1931). Hanna-Herta had made a career in Berlin as a social worker, primarily working with children.
