Arnold Lazarus Collection 1879-1944

This collection contains personal and family documents of the noted rabbi and scholar Arnold Lazarus, and is particularly strong in documenting his time as a German field chaplan in World War I.Newspapers in the first folder contain photos of Lazarus on duty as field chaplan. The second folder contains documents pertaining to his field service, including identification, assignment, the award of the Iron Cross and an instructional pamphlet for Jewish field chaplans. Also in this folder are documents pertaining to his family's life under the Nazi regime, including Lazarus's death certificate and a document freeing Martha Lazarus, then in Belgium, from wearing the Jewish star. The final folder contains a printed copy of a speech celebrating Lazarus's 25 year tenure at the Westend Synagogue in Frankfurt am Main, and a photocopy of a dedication handwritten by Arnold Lazarus in a copy of Moritz Lazarus's biography.LBI Library, call number r 16.Arnold Lazarus was born in Breslau in 1877, where his father Leiser Lazarus was Principal of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Lazarus passed his rabbinical examination at this seminary while simultaneously studying at the University of Breslau. After teaching religion in Breslau, he was summoned to Frankfurt in 1904, practicing there alongside Rabbi Caesar Seligmann and later with Rabbi Georg Salzberger.
