Kurt Zander Collection 1838-1926

This collection is divided into three broad categories, which each are assigned a single folder. The first folder, documents and papers, contains family papers of Zander's maternal ancestors (Prager family), including a Bürgerbrief, as well as various personal papers pertaining to Kurt Zander himself, including honorary certificates, citizenship documents, and memorial poems. Also in this folder is a bound volume of Kurt Zander's published pamphlets, often signed and dedicated by Zander himself, on the Baghdad Railway and his tenure with the Anatolische Eisenbahngesellschaft. Related to these materials is a passport located in the oversized folder. The bulk of the second folder, correspondence, consists of letters written by Martha Brunnemann, the governess of Zander's children, during the Zander's time in Greece and Turkey in 1904-1905. Also located in this folder is a letter from Albert Ballin and a condolence letter from Deutsche Bank written upon Zander's death. Finally, the photographs folder contains primarily images of various members of the Zander and Prager families, but there are also photos of their homes in Stettin and Greece as well as images of art objects in their collection. A photograph of a portrait drawing of Kurt Zander signed and dedicated by Zander to his daughter is located in the oversized folder.Zander was born Johannes Kurt Zander in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland) in 1860 and studied law. In 1894 he married Gertrud Simon. He was closely involved in the Anatolische Eisenbahngesellschaft (Anatolian Rail Company, now Anadolu Demiryolu Şirketi) during its attempts to build the Baghdad Railway in 1904-1905, and his family kept a house on the Aegean island Prinkipo (now Büyükada, Turkey), during this endeavor. Starting in 1905 he was the second director of Deutsche Bank.
