Gordon is the daughter of Stephanie Johanna Stern (1901-1996) and Phillip Hans Walter Oppenheimer (1897-1988).Phillip Oppenheimer was born in 1897 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany to Jewish parents. After serving in the German army during World War I, in 1926 he obtained a doctorate in engineering at the Munich Technical University.
