Diary written in 1940 by Chanan Benhar at the age of 17 and reviewed in 1980. Recollections of the emigration of a German Jewish youth group from Germany to Haifa, over the Danube, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean in 1940. On arrival in Haifa the emigrant group was transferred to the ship Patria which exploded and sank in the harbour. The diary is a day by day account of the experiences of the journey, the treatment of the refugees by the various national authorities, the suspense at the borders, and the disciplines which kept them alive until about 250 of them perished in the explosion which sank the Patria.Letters by Roland Weiser (a cousin of Chanan Benhar) describing the diaryRoland Weiser, 1999 (photocopy)Roland Weiser & Chanan Benh...
