Répartition géographique des investissements directs étrangers en Chine

This thesis examines the geographical distribution of foreign direct investment (FDI) in China. The two major goal of this thesis are : 1.) To identify the main determinants of the geographical distribution of FDI in China. 2.) To find out how this distribution evolved as China widened its openness. Empirical studies were carried out at both the provincial and city levels. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter described China's gradual opening-up to foreign investors and the main characteristics of its inward FDI. The second chapter made a literature review of theories and models related to the location of FDI. The third chapter carried out econometric analyses on the determinants of FDI distribution. The results showed that the FDI distribution in China was mainly determined by the economic size and the geographical position of each region, as well as by the regional difference of China's preferential policies. In addition, the infrastructure and education level had also an important influence on the location choices of foreign investors. Besides, this study underscored that some Chinese regions possessed simultaneously many location advantages, while others were disadvantaged in many respects. Therefore, it suggested that the government should give stronger support to those backward regions. The fourth chapter studied the evolution of the FDI distribution in China. It showed that the provincial FDI concentration degree had fallen during 1986-2000, and that this fall was mainly due to the decrease of the within-group inequality. Besides, most of the FDI dispersion happened before 1994. The FDI concentration degree became rather stable after 1994. Finally, the fifth chapter compared the location choices of four major investing countries (regions) in China. Although most FDI was concentrated in the coastal area, this chapter underlined that different investors had different location preferences within the coastal area.Cette thèse examine la répartition géographique des investissements directs étrangers (IDE) en Chine. Ses objectifs principaux sont de répondre à deux questions complémentaires : 1) celle des déterminants de la répartition géographique des IDE en Chine; 2) celle de l'évolution de cette répartition au cours du temps. Les analyses empiriques ont été menées à deux niveaux géographiques (provincial et départemental. Cette thèse est divisée en cinq chapitres. Le premier chapitre présente le processus de l'ouverture chinoise et les principales caractéristiques des IDE en Chine. Le deuxième chapitre propose une revue des explications théoriques qui ont été apportées à la localisation des IDE. Le troisième chapitre est consacré à l'analyse empirique des déterminants de la répartition des IDE parmi les régions chinoises. Les résultats ont montré que cette répartition est notamment déterminée par la taille économique et la position géographique de chaque région ainsi que la différence régionale en matière de politique préférentielle. De plus, l'infrastruture et le niveau d'éducation ont aussi un impact important sur la localisation des IDE. Par ailleurs, cette étude a souligné la concentration régionale des avantages (ou désavantages) en Chine, elle suggère donc que le gouvernement doive accorder un soutien vigoureux aux régions arriérées. Le quatrième chapitre examine l'évolution de la répartition des IDE au cours du temps. Il a montré que la concentration provinciale des IDE a connu une baisse pendant 1986-2000, et que cette baisse est principalement due à la réduction de l'inégalité intragroupe. En outre, la dispersion des IDE s'est essentiellement produite avant 1994. Après 1994, le niveau de concentration des IDE est devenu assez stable. Enfin, le cinquième chapitre mène une étude comparée de la localisation des IDE selon leur origine. Il a mis en évidence les similitudes et les différences en matière de localisation des quatre principaux investisseurs en Chine
