International audienceIn this paper I study the five Asterix albums translated in British English by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge and then later in American English by Robert Stephen Cohen. The enormous success Asterix had in France and Europe as well as the failure of the British English translation on the American market led the French publisher to go for a new American translation, an adventure that was brought to an end after five albums which met with the same lack of understanding on the other side of the Atlantic.
