International audienceFrom 1961 to 1989, the Berlin Wall was the most powerful material proof of the division of Berlin, Germany, Europe and the world in two antagonistic models of civilization. The collapse of the GDR led the fast complete destruction of the "Wall of Shame" in the weeks and the months following its opening on the 9th november 1989. After a tabula rasa policy in the 1990s, the new touristic attractiveness of Berlin and the controversy around GDR heritage in the German collective memory contributed to engage several "memory entrepreneurs" in a debate about the marks of the Wall : Could the Berlin Wall be considered as a object of preservation ?
