Escape from the Holocaust.

This memoir was written for a Holocaust Survivors' Webpage for people who went to Hunter College High School, New York City, NY. Lisa F. Barclay's memoir is short and concise. She talks briefly about her family's background and her childhood in pre-war Vienna. The "Anschluss" of Austria to Nazi Germany in March 1938 changed everything. The family was forced to emigrate. Her parents were a mixed couple - the father Jewish, the mother a Catholic. They got help from a number of Catholic friends, which gave them a few more options than a Jewish family. They got the US affidavit through an American relative, but had to wait long for the actual visas, since her father was born in Hungary and therefore considered under the quota for Hungarian citizens. After leaving Austria in 1938, they temporarliy lived in Paris, France, and Lisbon, Portugal. The memoir ends with a description of the living conditions after their arrival in New York.Lisa F. Barclay, 10/16/2003Lisa Frances Barclay, née Kurcz, was born in Vienna on 06/18/1932. She lived there at Maerzstrasse 84, in the fourth district, together with her parents, her sister, and a maid. Her father was a non-practicing Jew and a physician, and her mother was a non-practicing Catholic. In 1938, Lisa was baptized (Roman Catholic). She left Vienna in 07/1938, and went first to Paris, then via ship to Portugal, where her father found a job with the local Jewish community. They stayed until 05/1941 and left for the USA. Later on, she went to Hunter College, NY, and became a university professor (University of Kentucky 1969-1991).
