History of the Simon Hirschland bank house in Essen from its beginnings in 1841 until its last year of existence in 1938. Contains also description of general economic development in Ruhr area and family tree of Hirschland family.Simon Hirschland (1807-1885), the son of a poor teacher, started his bank business in Essen in 1841. His son Isaac expanded the bank when he entered the business in 1874. The third generation made the family bank into an international firm. This account was written in February 1938, a few months before the bank's "aryanization", and intended as a draft for the hundredth anniversary Festschrift of the business.EssenGenealog
