La mort du narrateur et l'interprétation du roman. L'exemple de Pedro Páramo de Juan Rulfo

International audienceIn this paper, I shall test communicational and non communicational or poetic theories of the fictional narrative against an empirical micro-reading. The text I selected to this end is Juan Rulfo's novel, Pedro Páramo (Mexico, Fondo de Cultura Económica, 1955), which I shall examine in Spanish and in both its French translations respectively by Roger Lescot (Paris, Gallimard, "La Croix du Sud", 1959) and Gabriel Iaculli (ibid., "Du monde entier", 2005). I shall explain why I selected this work in my first part and summarize the reasons for this choice at the beginning of the second. Given that Juan Preciado is seen by all critics as the fictional narrator -- i.e. the character endowed with the role of narrator in the fictional world -- who, then, is the fictional narrator of the second part of the novel? Is the fictional narrator of the second part of the novel also Juan Preciado's narrative's "reporter" in the first part of the novel? In other words, does he assume responsibility for the whole novelistic montage, introduced as the assembling of real-life material. Answers to the first question will be sought in the available critical work on of Pedro Páramo with the conclusion that this critical corpus offers no answer to the second one. I shall then examine the problems raised by the presentation of the second part of Pedro Páramo as issuing from a fictional narrator, just like Juan Preciado's narrative in the first part of the novel, which I shall divide into: 1) problems about the inner consistency of the critical discourse; 2) organizational problems concerning interpretive work; 3) problem of the falsification of erroneous interpretations. In the third part of this paper I shall suggest a possible critical reading of Pedro Páramo inspired from non communicational or poetic theories of the fictional narrative, and detail its advantages. The paper ends with a "Note on the translation of verbal tenses in Pedro Páramo", including a comparison between Roget Lescot's and Gabriel Iaculli's translations.Dans cet article, je me propose de mettre les théories communicationnelles et les théories non communicationnelles ou poétiques du récit de fiction à l'épreuve d'une micro-lecture empirique. Le texte choisi est le roman de Juan Rulfo, Pedro Páramo (Mexico, Fondo de Cultura Económica, 1955), que j'étudie en espagnol et dans les deux traductions françaises de Roger Lescot (Paris, Gallimard, coll. "La Croix du Sud", 1959) et de Gabriel Iaculli (ibid., coll. "Du monde entier", 2005). Les raisons de ce choix sont expliquées dans la première partie et résumées au début de la deuxième : sachant que, pour tous les critiques, Juan Preciado est le narrateur fictionnel, c'est-à-dire le personnage qui a statut de narrateur dans le monde fictionnel, de la première partie du roman, qui est le narrateur fictionnel de la seconde partie du roman ? le narrateur fictionnel de la seconde partie du roman est-il également le "rapporteur" du récit de Juan Preciado dans la première partie du roman, autrement dit assume-t-il la responsabilité de l'ensemble du montage romanesque, présenté comme le montage de documents réels ? J'analyse les réponses apportées à la première question dans la critique de Pedro Páramo et je signale qu'on ne trouve pas de réponse à la deuxième dans ce corpus critique. J'envisage ensuite les problèmes posés par la présentation de la seconde partie de Pedro Páramo comme émanant d'un narrateur fictionnel au même titre que le récit de Juan Preciado dans la première partie du roman, que je répartis en : 1) problèmes de cohérence interne du discours critique ; 2) problèmes d'organisation du travail de l'interprétation ; 3) problèmes de falsification des mauvaises interprétations. Dans la troisième partie de l'article, j'imagine ce que serait une lecture critique de Pedro Páramo qui s'inspirerait des théories non communicationnelles ou poétiques du récit de fiction, et j'en décris les avantages. L'article se termine par une "Note sur la traduction des temps verbaux dans Pedro Páramo", dans laquelle je compare les traductions de Roger Lescot et de Gabriel Iaculli
