Multifunctionality of pebbles used in the Upper Paleolithic: an ethnographic approach.

Here a pebble used by a Tuareg family illustrates the frequent multifunctional character of these tools. This character increases the difficulty of interpreting their traces of use, and that recourse to data of an ethnographic nature can bring a not-insignificant bonus of information - or at least a number of original hypotheses.Une approche ethnographique aide à la compréhension de l'utilisation des blocs, galets et plaquettes au Paléolithique. Ici un galet utilisé par une famille touarègue illustre le catactère plurifonctionnel fréquent de ces outils. Ce caractère accroît la difficulté d'interprétation de l eurs traces d'usage, et le recours à des données d'ordre ethnographique peut apporter des informations significatives, ou au moins permettre d'élargir le faisceau des hypothèses
