International audienceThis paper analyzes the kiva, an architectural feature unique to Native American Pueblos of Arizona and New Mexico. The first part attempts to find stable criteria for identifying kivas in different Pueblo groups, at different periods. The second part traces the origin and typo-morphological evolution of the kiva. Follows an analysis of practices more focused on Hopi society.
