Rarely have the Middle Ages seemed so contemporary. We have seen, over the last serveral years, a real "clash of memories" concerning the interaction between Jews, Christians and Muslims in Medieval Spain. For some, this was a history of struggle, conflict, scorn and disdain: the "Reconquista" was simply the local variety of the global struggle between crusaders and jihadists engaged in a "clash of civilizations". To counter this crude caricature of history, other historians and writers have erected a much more congenial myth, but one that is no less simplistic: that of Medieval Spain as a common meeting ground between three cultures that showed mutual respect and admiration; a true golden age of entente cordiale between religions and cultu...
