After a decade of steady increase in the number of work accidents, the issue of health and safety at work has received renewed attention in US corporations during the first half of the 1990s. This article describes the role played by the major actors who contributed to this new visibility, in particular that of the health and safety inspection, which operates in a public health perspective, and that of occupational hazards insurers, who operate under market mechanisms. At the same time, the rates of accidents and occupational pathologies have strongly decreased, especially those of musculoskeletal diseases.
