International audienceIn French, as in many typologically different languages, andative and venitive periphrases have grammaticalised into markers of time. However, this is far to be their only interpretation. Our study lists for French eleven uses of periphrases based on aller and venir split in three constructions: (i) auxiliary with (preposition +) infinitive; (ii) auxiliary with present participle and (iii) auxiliary with past participle. Constructions (ii) and (iii) have become archaic in French, but construction (i) covers a large range of uses (temporal, modal, expressive...).
