Chaplain Emanuel Schenk conducts services, 1945

Text on back of photograph: Chaplain (Captain) Emanuel Schenk of New York City, attached to the 4th Armored Division of General Patton's Third Army, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for "meritorious service in connection with military operations against the enemy, during 1944-45, in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany." In addition, Chaplain Schenk is entitled to wear the Presidential Unit Citation, awarded for the second time in history to a division. The Fourth Armored Division won this award for their heroic dash across Germany as the spearhead for Patton's Third Army.Text continued: A graduate of New York University and the Jewish Institute of Religion, and a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, Chaplain Schenk served the West End TEmple, Rockaway Park, N.Y. before being comissioned as Chaplain in May, 1941. Serving in the United States until December, 1943, he was then assigned overseas in England and later in France. He conducted the first Jewish service in liberated Nancy and in Vio-sur-Seille. In Fentrange he held services in the desecrated synagogue formerly used as a hayloft by the Nazis. He accompanied his division into Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany.
