Les lois de la nature à l'âge classique : la question terminologique

International audienceIf the studies devoted to the appearance of the concept of law in 18th-century science diverge, it is largely because they do not deal with the same problem. We must in fact distinguish between the following four propositions: 1. Scholars of the 17th century discovered certain regularities in natural phenomena. 2. The word "law" became more and more frequent in the scientific texts of the modern period. 3. One or more concepts of law emerged in the sciences of the 17th century. 4. Classical science instituted the idea of Nature as a universal legality. The article "Les lois de la nature au XVIIe siècle : le problème terminologique" is centered on the second proposition: in it, I examine the generalization of the classical meaning of the word "law" in the common language of science. The classical meaning of the word "law" is characterized in this article by the encounter of the two following usages: (a) A law indicates a natural regularity that concerns an abstract phenomenon and that can be expressed as a relation between magnitudes (physico-mathematic usage); (b) The laws of Nature apply without exception to all bodies and are rules which enabled the divine lawgiver to institute Nature (metaphysical usage). This characteristic allows us to understand the emergence of the physico-mathematic sense of the word "law" from among the three usages of the term "law" that existed before the 17th century in contexts relating to science or to the description of Nature (specific usage; disciplinary usage; mathematical usage). As to the metaphysical usage, it certainly existed before the 17th century, in particular in the moral domain, but the occurrences of the "law of Nature" in a strictly physical context were exceptional, with the inalterable order of a Nature created by God being described rather by other metaphors, "order" of course, "decrees", "dispositions", "constitution", "system". This semantic approach is then complemented by a quantitative evaluation. Before 1660, the word "law" is uncommon in contexts relating to the sciences or the description of Nature, and the rare authors who make use of it do so in a singular fashion. The word spreads in the 1660s and 70s, when it coexists with other terms which it does not supplant, such as "rule", "principle", "hypothesis" or "theorem"; the members of the Royal Society make a singular use of it. The dictionaries and data bases show that the word was generalized at the end of the 17th century in texts where the physico-mathematical usage and the metaphysical usage come to be articulated. This publication is a new tentative in the unfrequented genre of studies in historical semantics. It leads to a better appreciation of the scientific and metaphysic debates, from which the law emerges as the seminal entity in the epistemology of physics.Les études consacrées à l'apparition du concept de loi dans les sciences du XVIIe siècle divergent parce qu'elles ne traitent pas du même problème. Il faut distinguer les propositions suivantes : 1. Les savants ont découvert certaines régularités dans les phénomènes. 2. Le mot " loi " devient plus fréquent dans les textes scientifiques. 3. Un (ou des) concept(s) de loi a (ont) émergé dans les sciences. 4. La science classique repose sur l'idée de la nature comme légalité universelle. L'article " Les lois de la nature au XVIIe siècle : le problème terminologique " est centré sur la deuxième et la troisième de ces propositions. Je caractérise le sens classique du mot " loi " par la rencontre des deux conditions suivantes : (a) Une loi indique une régularité naturelle portant sur un phénomène abstrait et s'exprimant comme un rapport entre grandeurs (usage physico-mathématique) ; (b) Les lois de la nature s'appliquent sans exception à tous les corps et sont les règles qui ont permis au législateur divin de constituer la nature (usage métaphysique). Cette caractérisation permet de comprendre l'émergence du sens physico-mathématique du mot " loi " à partir des trois usages du terme " loi " qui existaient avant le XVIIe siècle dans des contextes touchant aux sciences ou à la description de la nature (usage spécifique ; usage disciplinaire ; usage mathématique).Quant à l'usage métaphysique, il existait avant le XVIIe siècle, en particulier dans le domaine moral, mais les occurrences de " loi de la nature " dans un contexte strictement physique étaient exceptionnelles, l'ordre inaltérable de la nature étant plutôt appréhendé par d'autres termes. Cette approche sémantique est finalement complétée par une évaluation quantitative. Avant 1660, le mot " loi " est rare dans des contextes touchant aux sciences ou à la description de la nature, et les quelques auteurs qui y recourent en font un usage singulier. Dans les années 1660-1680, il coexiste avec des termes qu'il ne supplante pas, comme " règle ", " principe ", " hypothèse " ou " théorème ", en particulier à la Royal Society. Les dictionnaires et les bases de données en ligne montrent enfin qu'il se généralise à la fin du XVIIe siècle dans des textes où l'usage physico-mathématique et l'usage métaphysique en viennent à être articulés. Cet article constitue une tentative dans un genre encore peu pratiqué, celui des études de sémantique historique. Il permet de mieux apprécier les débats scientifiques et métaphysiques au terme desquels la loi est devenue l'entité épistémologique fondamentale de la physique
