: The celtic village of Levroux (Indre, France) : nature and organisation of the iron metallurgical activities (IIe-Ist C. B.C.).

International audienceThe open agglomeration of Levroux, considered to be an artisanal centre, is known for the dynamism of its production's activities : animal husbandry, transformation of horn and animal bones, bronze and iron metallurgy... Placed into wider perspective of the study of the circulation of iron as a raw material, at the end of the Iron age, this new study of the siderurgical (iron metallurgy) material of Levroux, permits a better characterization of the modality of the organization and the character of the iron metallurgical activities on this site. It has revealed that this agglomeration import iron as a raw material, which is then refined on site with a view to the fabrication of both iron semi-products and objects. The identification of at least five different workshop sectors provides precision concerning the scale of the iron production, the kind of activities practised (refining/forge) and their nature (generalized/specialised), by sector. Finally, it is possible to apprehend the rhythm of the organisation of the activities within a diachronic sequence, their specialization, and the exchanges within the site and with the surrounding area.L'agglomération ouverte de Levroux, qualifiée d'artisanale, est connue pour le dynamisme de ses activités de production : gestion du cheptel animal, travail de l'os, métallurgie des alliages base-cuivre, du fer... Dans une perspective plus large d'étude de la circulation du fer en tant que matière première, à la fin de l'âge du Fer, la reprise du mobilier sidérurgique de Levroux permet de s'intéresser plus précisément aux modalités d'organisation, et aux caractères de l'activité sidérurgique sur ce site. Il s'avère que cette agglomération importe une matière première brute, épurée sur place dans une perspective de fabrication de demi-produits et d'objets. L'existence d'au moins cinq zones d'ateliers permet d'étudier l'ampleur de la production, les activités pratiquées (épuration/forge) et leur nature (généraliste/spécialisée) par secteurs. Il est finalement possible d'appréhender les rythmes de l'organisation des activités dans leur succession chronologique, leur spécialisation, ainsi que les échanges internes et externes
