: Seeing and hearing the chant of the mass

Cuadernos de investigación del Monasterio de Santa María la RealInternational audienceThis contribution explores the different aspects of the illustration of an antiphonary fragment from the thirteenth century, very probably produced in south germany, and kept today at the walters art museum in Baltimore. The representation of the assumption of the virgin Mary shows several iconographical details which are made to create a kind of liturgical image where the synesthesy must be activated during the performance of the introit procession of the mass. One must add also a very strong theological meaning of the iconography of the image and its both liturgical and sensorial activation through the object: the liturgical book.Cet article propose une exploration approfondie de l'illustration d'un fragment d'antiphonaire du XIIIe siècle, sans doute réalisé en Allemagne du sud et conservé aujourd'hui à la Walters Gallery de Baltimore. La représentation de l'assomption de la Vierge Marie montre des traits iconographiques destinés à faire de cette image une scène rituelle où se développe l'activation synesthésique dans le déroulement de la procession d'introit de la messe. A cela, vient s'ajouter la forte dimension théologique de la lecture sensorielle de l'image et de la fonction de l'objet dans le déroulement de la liturgie
