Poséidon en terre d'Athènes : un dieu entre séisme et fondation

Our purpose is to revalue the position of Poseidon whose role in the city of Athena has been often minimized. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part analyzes the very relation of Poseidon to the territory, the second one reveals his role as founder right after the contest between himself and Athena over the city. The analysis of the relation of Poseidon to the territory is central to this work: he is "holding" the land, he is ensuring, fixing, and supporting the foundations. On the other hand, the city of Athens is reflecting its autochthony since it is not founded in the way of the "colonization". The mythical discourses constantly reiterate the foundation of the city on its own land. Therefore, Poseidon possesses a central position within the land of Athens, and that following to the mythic rivalry between the two pretenders for the title of Poliad deity. Even though Athena wins the eris and is awarded of the epithet, Poseidon is not excluded. Athena protects and represents the city, she defends the Athenian walls and is represented on her coins. On the other hand, Poseidon completes the process of foundation of the polis. He is the guard of its origins, the guarantor of its stability, the god of the safe foundations that citizens call the "Holder of the land", and receives centrals honors in the autochthonous city. Thanks to Poseidon who roots Athenians on their land, the city of Athens succeeds its own foundation.Cette recherche, qui propose une réflexion sur la construction de l'identité mythique d'Athènes et son lien au territoire, choisit de revaloriser la place de Poséidon, trop souvent marginalisé dans la cité d'Athéna. La thèse est scindée en deux parties : la première suit Poséidon au cœur de la terre, la deuxième le consacre fondateur à l'issue du partage qui s'opère avec Athéna. J'ai tout d'abord choisi d'analyser les compétences de Poséidon sur la terre : tenir/soutenir le sol, assurer les assises, enraciner et soutenir les fondations. La cité d'Athènes, qui se raconte autochthone car elle n'a pas été fondée sur le mode de la " colonisation ", renouvelle dans ses discours mythiques en permanence ses fondations avec la terre qui l'a générée. Elle va ainsi accorder au dieu Poséidon une place centrale en terre d'Athènes à l'issue d'un mythe de partage qui met en rivalité deux prétendants au titre de Poliade. Si Athéna gagne l'eris en recevant le titre " politique", Poséidon n'est pas exclu pour autant. Certes, Athéna protège et représente la cité, défend les murs d'Athènes et s'affiche sur les monnaies, mais c'est Poséidon qui pose l'ultime maillon de fondation de la polis. Gardien des origines, garant de la stabilité, ce dieu à l'assise sûre que les citoyens appellent Celui qui tient la terre, siège en réalité avec tous les honneurs sur la cité autochthone. Grâce à Poséidon, Athènes a réussi le pari de son " autofondation " car ce sont tous les Athéniens que le dieu enracine sur leur propre terre
