Une voûte à clef pendante du XIIIe siècle à Saint-Urbain de Troyes

ISBN : 978-2-901837-44-2International audienceThe collegiate church of Saint-Urbain in Troyes, a remarkable rayonnant monument, preserves in its south sacristy a hanging keystone that has never been published. It is studied for the first time in this article. Critical research on its authenticity allows us to conclude that whereas the actual vault is a remounting made by Selmersheim in 1877, the boss, which is carved with a Coronation of the Virgin, is ancient. The stylistic study, combined with an analysis of the phases of construction of the church, results in a dating of around 1280-1290. The possible meaning of the keystone is examined in the theological context surrounding the establishment of the observance of the Fête-Dieu by Urbain IV, founder of the collegiate church. Given its dating, the keystone at Saint-Urbain de Troyes turns out to be the only thirteenth-century example known on French soil. The keystone is of particular interest given the success of this type of architectural ornament in the flamboyant style in France, but also in three major European constructions of the mid fourteenth century - the Cathedral of Strasbourg, the Papal Palace at Avignon, and the Cathedral of Prague -, which until now were thought to be the oldest examples of Gothic monuments with hanging keystones.Monument insigne de l'art gothique rayonnant, la collégiale Saint-Urbain de Troyes présente, dans sa sacristie méridionale, une voûte à clef pendante qui n'a jamais été publiée. Le présent article est la première étude scientifique qui lui soit consacrée. La critique d'authenticité permet de conclure que, si la voûte actuelle résulte d'un remontage effectué par Selmersheim en 1877, le bouton de la clef pendante, sculpté d'un Couronnement de la Vierge, est ancien. L'étude stylistique, croisée avec l'analyse des phases de construction de la collégiale, conduit à une datation autour de 1280-1290. La signification possible de cette clef est examinée dans le contexte théologique qui mène à l'instauration de la Fête-Dieu par Urbain IV, fondateur de la collégiale. Ainsi datée, la voûte à clef pendante de Saint-Urbain de Troyes s'avère être la seule connue à ce jour sur le sol français pour tout le XIIIe siècle. Elle revêt un intérêt particulier étant donné le succès de ce type d'ornement architectural dans le style flamboyant en France, mais aussi dans trois chantiers majeurs du gothique européen au milieu du XIVe siècle - la cathédrale de Strasbourg, le Palais des Papes d'Avignon, la cathédrale de Prague -, qui passaient jusqu'à présent pour les plus anciens exemples de monuments gothiques dotés de voûtes à clefs pendantes
