National audienceModels are found in physics, chemistry, biology, and geology alike, and for this reason, they can create coherence in the teaching of the different sciences. The French curriculum requires teachers to first tackle models in junior high school, in spite of the fact that research has shown that both pupils and teachers have difficulty understanding the notion which are due to its epistemology. It is for this reason that in this paper we have focussed on a form of teaching which could help to make the distinction between the model and what it represents.
